Ferrari Pays Tribute to Michael Schumacher at Monza with Special 1996-Inspired Design
Ferrari will honor one of the most important figures in its Formula 1 history at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. As the race at Monza marks 30 years since Michael Schumacher joined the Scuderia, Ferrari will bring a special livery inspired by the German driver's first season with the team.
Schumacher joined Ferrari in 1996 and became the centerpiece of the team's transformation into a dominant force in Formula 1. Five of his seven world championships came during his Ferrari years, establishing him as one of the most successful drivers in the history of the legendary Italian team.
That makes this year's Italian Grand Prix more than just Ferrari's home race. It will also serve as a celebration of Schumacher's enduring legacy at the Scuderia.
A tribute to Schumacher's first Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will race cars featuring design elements inspired by the Ferrari F310, the car Schumacher drove during his first season with the team in 1996.
The special design will include gold details on the wheels, echoing the appearance of Schumacher's original Ferrari. The cars will also feature Schumacher's personal logo and the seven stars that decorated his helmet, representing his seven world championship titles.
Only one other driver has matched Schumacher's record of seven championships: Lewis Hamilton. That makes Hamilton's participation in the special tribute particularly symbolic as he takes to the Monza track in a Ferrari carrying visual references to the man whose record he eventually equaled.
Schumacher's championship-winning Ferrari returns
Ferrari's tribute will extend beyond the modern F1 cars.
Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will drive the Ferrari that carried Schumacher to the 2002 world championship in a special celebratory lap ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix.
Schumacher's former Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello will also drive the legendary car around Monza on Saturday, giving fans another opportunity to see one of the most iconic machines from Ferrari's championship-winning era back on track.
Hamilton and Leclerc will also wear special race suits for the Monza weekend, adding another layer to Ferrari's celebration of its history.
Ferrari looking for a third win of the season
While Schumacher's legacy will be at the heart of the weekend, Ferrari will also have important sporting ambitions at Monza.
The team is chasing its third victory of the season after Hamilton won in Barcelona and Leclerc triumphed at Silverstone. A strong result at home would be particularly valuable as the championship battle continues to develop.
Hamilton currently sits among the closest challengers to championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Both Hamilton and George Russell are 59 points behind the Italian driver heading into the 13th race of the season.
Antonelli, however, is expected to receive a grid penalty at Monza after exceeding the power-unit allocation permitted for the season. Such a penalty could provide Hamilton and other title contenders with a valuable opportunity to close the gap.
For Ferrari, therefore, the Monza weekend will combine two very different but equally important stories. Schumacher's extraordinary legacy will be celebrated three decades after he joined the Scuderia, while Hamilton and Leclerc will attempt to turn Ferrari's home race into another important step in the championship fight.
With Monza's unique place in Ferrari culture, a weekend dedicated to Schumacher is set to become one of the most emotionally significant events of the Formula 1 season.
