Gollum Returns: First Look at the New The Lord of the Rings Movie Revealed

Production has officially begun on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the next chapter in the beloved Middle-earth saga. Warner Bros. has confirmed the start of filming while also releasing the first behind-the-scenes footage featuring Andy Serkis, who returns as Gollum and serves as the film's director.

The newly released teaser shows Serkis reviewing the script before filming begins. He then asks a crew member, "What are we starting with?" After hearing the reply, "Scene one, from the beginning," Serkis smiles and references the 1965 classic musical The Sound of Music, saying, "A very good place to start."

Moments later, the actor slips into Gollum's familiar posture while wearing his motion-capture suit. Hunching his shoulders and recreating the character's signature grin, Serkis enthusiastically shouts, "Action!" The teaser concludes with breathtaking drone footage showcasing New Zealand's dramatic mountain landscapes, once again bringing Middle-earth to life.

A reunion of the original creative team

The Hunt for Gollum reunites Andy Serkis with legendary filmmakers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the creative minds behind both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Their return has fueled excitement among longtime fans eager to revisit Tolkien's iconic universe.

The cast also blends familiar faces with new additions. Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace are expected to reprise their legendary roles, while acclaimed actors Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, Leo Woodall, and Anya Taylor-Joy join the expanding ensemble.

"It feels like a family reunion"

Speaking previously about returning to Middle-earth, Andy Serkis described the experience as deeply emotional. He explained that many members of the original production team have reunited for the project, and in some cases, even the children of former crew members are now working on set, making the production feel like a true family reunion.

Release date confirmed

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to premiere in theaters worldwide on December 17, 2027. The film promises to explore Gollum's story in greater depth while expanding one of fantasy cinema's most beloved universes.
