WhatsApp, the world’s leading instant messaging platform, continues to enhance user experience with new updates. One of its most anticipated features, usernames, is set to transform the app into a platform that resembles social media more than ever.
While an official release date has yet to be confirmed, the feature will allow users to create a unique identity within the app.
According to findings by WABetaInfo in the latest Android beta, WhatsApp will launch a reservation system before usernames become widely available. This will enable users to secure their desired username in advance, preventing others from claiming it once the feature officially rolls out.
The reservation phase is expected to go live shortly before the global launch of usernames. Importantly, WhatsApp plans to make reservations available to everyone at the same time, ensuring fairness across its user base. Although usernames will be rolled out gradually, users who pre-reserve their names will be able to use them immediately when the feature arrives.
This move highlights WhatsApp’s broader ambition to expand beyond messaging, turning into a platform that integrates identity, community, and social interaction.
