Top Gun 3 in the works: The iconic franchise eeturns with a new chapter

One of the defining films of the 1980s, Top Gun made a powerful comeback decades later with its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The 2022 blockbuster defied expectations by grossing $1.49 billion globally, becoming a cultural and box office sensation. This enormous success paved the way for a third installment. Now, with concrete steps finally being taken, Top Gun 3 is beginning to take shape.

Christopher McQuarrie—who wrote and directed the last four Mission: Impossible films and contributed to the Maverick script—recently shared in a podcast that the story for Top Gun 3 is ready. He noted that shaping the storyline wasn't as challenging as expected and that the script has now been completed, bringing the project one major step closer to production.

While there's no official production timeline yet, the completion of the script suggests that filming could begin sooner than anticipated. The collaboration between Tom Cruise and McQuarrie once again fuels high expectations for the next entry in the franchise.

In Top Gun 3, Tom Cruise will reprise his role as the legendary pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Joining him will be returning stars Miles Teller as Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw and Glen Powell as Jake "Hangman" Seresin. The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed Maverick to critical and commercial acclaim. With this stellar team in place, Top Gun 3 promises to be another thrilling ride.
