BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has unveiled more thrilling details about the upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform, which promises to set new standards in the EV industry. One of the most remarkable features announced is the ability of these next-generation BMW EVs to gain an impressive 300 kilometers of range with just a 10-minute charge. This rapid charging capability is made possible by the cutting-edge 800-volt architecture integrated into the platform.
The Neue Klasse platform represents a pivotal shift for BMW as the automaker accelerates its transition towards a fully electric lineup. Production is slated to commence in 2025 with a new model that will replace the iX3, manufactured at BMW’s state-of-the-art factory in Debrecen, Hungary. This will be followed by the launch of an i3 sedan in 2026, produced at the Munich plant. Expansion of Neue Klasse production will continue with the Shenyang plant in China in 2026 and the San Luis Potosà facility in Mexico in 2027.
Zipse emphasized that the Neue Klasse EVs will offer at least a 30% enhancement in both range and charging speed compared to BMW’s current electric models. This significant improvement will be facilitated by the introduction of sixth-generation batteries featuring round cells. These advanced batteries are designed to deliver a 20% increase in energy density while also reducing production-related emissions by an impressive 60%. BMW plans to offer these batteries in three capacities: 75 kWh, 90 kWh, and 105 kWh.
Concepts such as the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse and 2024 Vision Neue Klasse X provide a glimpse into the future, showcasing the sedan and SUV models that will emerge from this innovative platform. Although BMW has kept specific details under wraps, it is anticipated that at least four additional models, including an i3 Touring and an iX4, will join the Neue Klasse lineup by 2028. Enthusiasts of BMW’s M division can also rejoice, as each new model will feature a high-performance M variant.
Practicality and versatility are also at the forefront of the Neue Klasse’s design. These vehicles will be equipped with bidirectional charging capabilities, enabling owners to not only power their homes but also feed energy back into the grid. While official confirmation of vehicle-to-vehicle charging is still pending, early indications suggest that Neue Klasse models may support the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Additionally, certain models, such as the iX3, are rumored to include a front trunk, providing extra storage space.
