Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone is once again making headlines, as new reports suggest the company may postpone the launch of its first foldable smartphone. Originally expected to arrive in late 2026, the device could now debut during the first months of 2027 due to ongoing manufacturing and supply chain challenges.
Apple has historically taken a cautious approach when entering new product categories, often waiting for technologies to mature before introducing its own version. Industry observers believe the reported delay reflects not only production difficulties but also Apple's commitment to maintaining strict quality standards.
Engineering Challenges Continue
Previous reports indicated that Apple has been investing significant resources into perfecting the device's hinge mechanism. Durability, long-term reliability, and minimizing display creases are said to be among the company's top priorities.
At the same time, Apple is reportedly facing challenges related to Surface Mount Technology (SMT), a key manufacturing process used to place electronic components onto printed circuit boards. Even minor production issues at this stage can create major delays when preparing a high-volume flagship product.

Recent industry reports have further fueled speculation about a postponement. Executives from Largan Precision, one of Apple's major suppliers, reportedly hinted that an upcoming Apple product may be pushed into the following year.
Since no changes are expected for the launch schedule of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, many analysts believe the comments are referring to the foldable iPhone.
Apple could choose to unveil the device in the traditional September event while delaying commercial availability for several months to ensure stable production and quality control.
Expected Specifications
Leaked information suggests that Apple is aiming squarely at the premium segment. The foldable iPhone is expected to feature Samsung's M14 OLED display technology, combined with Ultra Thin Glass and flexible display layers designed to reduce visible creasing.
Advanced adhesive structures, refined display protection technologies, and an innovative hinge system are also rumored to be part of the package. Some reports even suggest the hinge could function as a passive heat dissipation system.
Performance-wise, the device is expected to be powered by Apple's A20 Pro processor, paired with 12 GB of RAM and the company's custom C2 modem. Interestingly, rumors indicate that Apple may bring back Touch ID instead of relying solely on Face ID.
