F1 2026 Austrian Grand Prix: George Russell Triumphs After Thrilling Battle
George Russell secured a brilliant victory for Mercedes at the 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after controlling an action-packed 71-lap race at the Red Bull Ring.
Max Verstappen finished second following an intense battle with Lewis Hamilton, while rising Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third place.
Russell converts pole into victory
Starting from pole position, Russell made a clean getaway and immediately established himself at the front of the field.
Hamilton initially moved into second place ahead of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, but Verstappen steadily closed the gap as the opening laps unfolded.
Verstappen and Hamilton steal the spotlight
One of the highlights of the race was the fierce battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
The pair exchanged positions multiple times in a thrilling wheel-to-wheel fight before Verstappen finally secured second place after several determined overtaking attempts.
Some incidents between the two drivers were reviewed by race stewards due to track limit discussions.
Strategy played a decisive role
Pit stop timing proved crucial throughout the race.
Mercedes executed Russell's strategy perfectly, while Verstappen attempted alternative approaches to challenge for victory. Multiple Virtual Safety Car periods added another layer of complexity to the race strategy.
Mechanical retirements for Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll, along with brake and tire management issues across the field, further influenced the outcome.
Another impressive podium for Antonelli
Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable rookie campaign with another podium finish.
After battling Charles Leclerc for much of the race, the young Italian eventually secured third place. Although he closed the gap to Verstappen during the final laps, he was unable to mount a successful overtaking attempt.
Russell withstands late pressure
In the closing stages Verstappen reduced the gap to less than two seconds, while Antonelli also joined the fight at the front.
Despite the mounting pressure, Russell remained composed and crossed the finish line first to claim a well-deserved victory for Mercedes.
