Redefining Smartphones: OpenAI Speeds Up Its First AI Device

OpenAI is preparing to enter the smartphone market with a bold new concept: a fully AI-focused device. According to analysts, the company has accelerated development and is now targeting mass production in the first half of 2027.


One of the most notable decisions is the choice of chip supplier. OpenAI is reportedly partnering with MediaTek instead of Qualcomm, signaling a strategic shift in hardware design.

A Custom Chip Built for AI

The device will feature a customized version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 processor, manufactured using TSMC’s next-generation process.

Unlike traditional smartphones, this chip will prioritize AI workloads rather than benchmark performance. Its advanced image signal processor is designed to continuously interpret the user’s surroundings.

Additional features include dual NPUs, LPDDR6 memory, and UFS 5.0 storage, along with enhanced security technologies.

From Apps to AI Agents

OpenAI aims to fundamentally change how smartphones are used. Instead of relying on apps, the device will function as an “AI agent phone,” where users delegate tasks to an intelligent system.

Simple operations will run locally, while more complex tasks will be processed in the cloud, creating a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Ambitious Yet Uncertain

The company is targeting around 30 million shipments across 2027 and 2028, with Luxshare expected to handle production.

However, the move comes with risks. OpenAI has no prior experience in consumer hardware, and the AI-native device category is still emerging. The project has not yet been officially confirmed.
